Love Encourage Project in Hanyang University ♥

Our main theme is
'Love Encourage Project in Hanyang University'.

First, by using google-docs we did a survey to study the actual condition of love. Maybe you can see the surprising results through the survey.
Second, we interviewed a couple who are in very long love for some advice. Third, we interviewed some people who are solos now to share the various feelings. Even though they are common in terms of 'solo', each of them have different thoughts and feelings.

Our purpose is to advise solos what they can do to be successful in love and make Hanyang university full of love ♥.♥

In our final project, I interviewed a couple who are in very long love. Since I know that the couple are dating well for a long time, I choose them to be my interviewee. Also, I wrapped subtitles in video and conducted the survey to friends in Hanyang university.

Our theme is a fascinating subject and deserves attention!!

Thank you :)

Increased Tobacco Price in Korea

In Korea these days, one of the best topics of controversy is ‘Increased cigarette cost’. Government says this policy is for decreasing smoking rate but people say the government just wants more tax and it’s not effective to decrease smoking rate. Pros and Cons are in a tense conflict. So today, let’s see about good and bad points of increased cigarette cost policy.

There are good points of increased cigarette cost.

First, increased cigarette cost can help people stop smoking.
Korea had increased its cigarette cost twice in the past. In 2002, cost increased by 200won and increased by 500won in 2004 with decrease of smoking rate by 13% in 2004. So, it shows increased tobacco price is effective in decreasing smoking rate. Also, Korea did anti-smoking campaigns last 5 years. But smoking rate decreased only 0.8% during last 5years which shows campaigns are not effective. Only the campaign cannot make people stop smoke. Increasing cigarette cost and campaigns are needed in the same time.
Picture below is showing smoking rate and cigarette price of each country.

This video is about increased cigarette cost in New York in 2004 has resulted decreased smoking rate.

Second, Korean government can secure tax which is needed for public welfare policy.
These days, people ask more and more welfare to the government. By increasing tobacco price 1000won, 25,458,000,000 won will get per year. So, increased tobacco price can help government to plan better public welfare policy. Also, the recommended portion of tax in tobacco by WHO is 70% but Korea’s portion of tax in tobacco is 62% which is still lower than the recommended value.

Third, we can decrease Adolescent smoking rate which is severe problem in Korea.
Among OECD, Korea’s adolescent smoking rate is 1st in 15 countries and smoking rate of 3rd grade of high school is 25% which is twice of America’s. The first lighting-up age is 10~13 in Korea. Since Adolescent has no economic capacity, increased tobacco price will be the big blow to them. This graph shows ‘Adolescent smoking rate in Asian countries’. South Korea is the 1st among them.

This video is about how much adolescent smoking rate is expected to decrease according to the increased tobacco price.

Next, I’ll talk about the bad points.

First, Government put a greater burden on working class.
Since smoking rate is the biggest in working class, this policy can make them harder. Also, it causes ‘Reversibility of Income’ which means low income people would rather pay higher taxes. Since it is fair that rich people pay higher tax but government is imposing taxes on the wrong place. Also, 80% of tobacco retail stores are composed of small business which is usually owned by low-income group or middle class. Increased tobacco will reduce purchases of tobacco and threaten the right to life of owner of small business.

Second, it is possible to make fake and illegal cigarettes.
In 2001, few imported cigarette cost was increased and some fake cigarettes were in circulation from China. The fake cigarette has higher portion of Tar, Nicotine and CO. It makes people in vicious cycle since the more contaminant uptakes, the stronger tobacco will be needed. Finally, it’ll injure the public health more.

Third, government is making false claim just to get more tax.
There is a study about increasing tobacco price by David Cutler and Edward Glazer, a professor in Harvard University. They said about ‘Why Europeans smoke more than Americans?’. America has lower tobacco price and weak regulations than Europe but it also has lower smoking rate than Europe. Professors said that it’s because of the government’s effective and strong campaigns in America. If the government really wants to decrease smoking rates, they should do effective anti-smoking education and campaigns, not increasing tobacco price. Also, to make people quit smoking, it is known that increasing tobacco price extremely high in one time is effective. Some people quit smoking by psychological resistance in this case. People’s psychological resistance does not work when the price increases little because they think they can afford it. Raising 2000won will be not work in decreasing smoking rate. It is just for minimalizing the resistance of people and maximizing collecting taxes.

In my opinion, I agree with the increased tobacco price. Exercising increased tobacco price policy with more strict regulations will be perfect. Instead of saying good points of increased tobacco policy, I’m going to refute the bad points of this policy.

First, worrying about fake cigarette can be prevented by regulations. Since it is only possible to sell cigarette where the government allows, by tightening regulations about where to sell the cigarette will be helpful.

Second, government should open the use of tax. People can have resistance or complaint about paying more taxes, it can be lower by knowing where the tax I paid was used. It’ll reduce people’s complaint and build a clean society.

Third, we can participate in solving social problem. Some people might think adolescent smoking is none of their business. However, I’m sure that it’s prevailing problem around everybody. We should not just ignore the social problem. We should try to decrease and solve the problem together.

There are many good and bad points in increasing tobacco price. However, if we utilize the good points at most and make bad points at least by thinking about various countermeasures, we might get the best result through this policy. Everybody has different opinion on increased cigarette cost but everybody agrees that it is better to quit smoking. So, in my opinion, think this policy as an opportunity to quit smoking is not bad.

If you want to quit smoking and want some information about it, I’ll introduce a website to you. There is much information about how to quit smoke. I want to let people know the various ways and help themselves to quit smoke from this website.

SIX THINGS TO KEEP FOR A DIET

I made an infographic about 'SIX THINGS TO KEEP FOR A DIET'.

Since a diet is something hard and difficult to me and maybe for all people, I wrote the title in red like warning. Honeycombed designs can show pictures and writings all together effectively. I put one picture per one writing to help people understand my infographic well. To be able to distinguish the six things, six different colors are used for each honeycombs. Also, I put some pictures of slender women which can stimulate the women who want to go on a diet.

I recommend this website if you want to find more information about the DIET.
'Chatelaine' is Canada's leading women's media brand, and in the 'health/do-diet' section you can find various information.
Here is the link!

Good luck for everyone's diet (including me of course) !!  :)

Raising a rabbit

Few weeks ago, my family got one member more, a rabbit.
Her name is 돼끼(돼지토끼) means fat rabbit in Korean. (You can see why we call her like that if you see the picture below.)

At first, I thought it is easy to raise a rabbit since she is not barking, not pooped everywhere and do not need walking.
However, it was  ABSOLUTELY WRONG.
She is most acute, delicate and fussy pet that I have ever seen.
Now, I'll tell you how demanding is it to raise rabbits.

First, rabbits don't like WATER.

They only drinks water and not for shower.
Rabbit is an animal who should not have a bath because they clean themselves by grooming. You should use clean wet tissue to wash them some dirty parts like legs after walking.

Sometimes, I clean her cage and whole veranda (where she usually lives) with water. When I start to sprinkle water all over the veranda, she never ever come down from the chair. She barely jumps high but if you want to see it, start sprinkling water. That's the time she runs the highest.

Second, Rabbits eat away the surroundings.

Rabbit's teeth need to be ground periodically. If she doesn't grind something, her teeth will hurt herself. Give her something to grind, otherwise she will ruin your important resume, beautiful family heirloom and even your mind.

Third, Do not expect the charm to the rabbit.

There is no concept of master in rabbits so they don't act charming. Also, rabbits are quite shy, if something big moves, they run away to their cage.

I think 돼끼 also think me as a big animal that gives meal. When I go near her house with some carrots and cabbages in hands, she punch my hands with her powerful front legs. She just concentrated on the MEAL. She does not care who gives, who cares and who I am.

Besides these facts, I am really enjoying raising 돼끼.
She's so cute and I like her gluttony which is the most same part with me.

There is one wish. I just want her to tell me from my brother who is totally not interested in her. I wish... someday....

How wonderful is global volunteering !

I went to Cambodia for education volunteering work in this summer. I was there for 2 weeks with 18 students in our university and it was a fantastic experience,Today, I will tell you

"How wonderful experience is global volunteering".

First, I'll talk about 'before departure'.

Since our team was an education and volunteering team, we had to prepare many educational materials for class. We met once a week on Saturday since April and started to prepare the materials.

You guys may think it is hard, boring and tiring preparing materials but actually it's absolutely not. There is so many things to learn from there. Since we had music, piano, K-pop, Korean, science and art classes, we learned how to draw music sheet on computer for piano class and, how to compose the book for Korean class and the English. Since we have to communicate in English with Cambodian students, we had to write the script of all classes in English.
It was really helpful process to all members.

Second, I'll talk about 'During the volunteering'.

We've worked in Life middle&high school and Hunsen high school.
Actually, they were in worse conditions than we thought. Hunsen high school did not have lights in classroom. Also, if it rains heavily, students can't go to school because they don't have any motorcycles, although it is very usual in Cambodia.

Even the darkness couldn't stop our volunteering spirit. Every student has enthusiasm towards learning. When we first got there, they did't know how to play the piano at all and they couldn't even read the music sheet. However, on the last day, they could play 'twinkle twinkle little star' with both hands. I was very proud of them and felt great.

The students in Cambodia are really adorable. I like their pure hearts. They welcomed us and participated in class with limpid eyes. Just 14 days were enough to make us feel attached to each other. A few students cried on the last day of class and we were so touched by their tears.

Furthermore, the people in the volunteering team were really good. They are voluntary, positive and thoughtful. In last 2 days, we traveled Khmer ruins in Cambodia like Angkor Wat. Traveling with our team in hot and humid air became a great experience of my lifetime,

Third is 'After Volunteering'.

Meaningful experience in a foreign country connect the volunteers.  After we came back to Korea, we often meet in a group and have fun. We still talk about the global volunteering and now it remains as precious memories that can be shared between us.

This is the end of my story about global volunteering.
I really recommend it so that you will have the same great experience as me.
I am convinced that you will say "It was the best experience in my life." in the end.

Thank you for reading :D
